Place Value and Base-10 Thinking

Place value is the idea that ten ones make a ten. Base-ten blocks or bundled straws make that trade visible. Grade 1 stops at tens and ones; hundreds wait.

Count a pile of ones. Every time you have ten, bundle them.
Name the number as tens and leftover ones.
Write it in expanded form (30 + 4) and standard form (34).
